Thanks to this talent of mine... I will feel alive again!
—Nephele Vetti, Chapter 3: "Rose&Release" and "My Real Me is Scattered", Part 1

Nephele Vetti (ネフェレ・ベティー, Nefere Betī) is a secondary antagonist featured in the comic Pink among Blood Red Roses.

Nephele is a woman who returns to Greenville in search of revenge for her sister's death, doing so by ambushing Rose Paisley in Greenville's allies and attempting to end her life.

Nephele is the first Talent user in the series, using her "My Real Me is Scattered" in battle. My Real Me is Scattered grants Nephele the ability to detach various parts of her own body and bind illusions to them, appearing as duplicates of herself.

Appearance

Nephele is a young woman with an athletic build, 183 cm (6 ft 0 in) tall. Her ears are short and triangular, matching with her feline-like species. Following her Talent's awakening, Nephele's body follows a theme of duality in various aspects: Her fur is part green and part yellow and her eyes are dark green and orange. Her eyes are similar to those of Rose Paisley, but slightly larger and wider. Her irises are oval with a bright pupil.

Nephele's most iconic bodily feature is her tattooed stitch marks that are found all over her body (with a total of 17 tattoos). In addition to these tattoos, Nephele also has two stitch marks on her cheeks which appeared following her sister's death, these ones being "natural". Rose describes Nephele to look similarly to a "living ragdoll".

Nephele's outfit consists of a (possibly handcrafted) mixture of cloths and fabrics that cover up the left side of her body. She wears a dark bra and thong under her top. Her left leg has a dark legging, and she wears a sports shoe on her right foot.

Personality

Hot-headed and emotionally unstable, Nephele is a woman whose tragic upbringing forced her onto a dark path of misery, madness, vengeance and finally, regret.

The way Nephele's personality was formed is directly tied and shaped by her relationship with the person she cared for most: Aura, her twin sister. From the day Nephele and Aura were born, a split began forming between the two, caused by the pair's parents consistently favoring Aura in all activities and events. This caused Nephele to be the shunned, disappointing child of the two, constantly questioning why she can't be more similar to Aura. Gradually, this treatment from her parents, teachers and fellow students caused Nephele's mental state to snap. Once she started secondary school, her mentality changed to "enjoying" spiting and hurting those who hurt her. She enjoyed disappointing her parents, and shortly after, she met Dolos Valentine and Peitho Branford, forming a trio of bullying with the two. The three of them bullied many kids, both younger and older than them. Eventually, when Nephele and co. picked on Rose and Holly Chevron, the former snapped and beat Nephele, causing her feelings of inferiority to return. This realization caused Nephele to snap once more and lead to Holly's death in the Red Valley Murder.

Nephele understood all along that she deserved what was coming to her, but she preferred to repress and deny her responsibility for the unfortunate events in her life for many years. Eventually, after Aura's personal life suffered from Nephele's actions, she grew increasingly malnourished and frail, which caused Nephele to question her with anger, making Aura yell in response "Haven't you done enough?!". After that event, Aura committed suicide, causing Nephele a massive amount of sudden mental anguish, causing Nephele to attempt to commit suicide herself a few months later. This, however, forced her Talent's awakening: My Real Me is Scattered. Taking this development as a sign from fate herself, Nephele swore to get revenge for Aura's death, however, this failed and Nephele failed to find the people directly responsible for Aura's death. In a fit of anger due to her failure, Nephele travelled to Greenville and attacked Rose Paisley.

By the time Nephele arrives to attack Rose, she's a shell of her original child self. Introducing herself with a childish wordplay to a terrified Rose and immediately launching an assault using her ability. Nephele is a particularly brutal fighter, using chokeholds, punching and kicking against Rose, holding nothing back. She also takes a very dominant role in their fight, constantly ordering Rose around and trying to subjugate her to her will.

Nephele is particularly prone to violent mood-swings, shifting from a calm facade to a furious screaming-filled rage and mania in a matter of seconds. This was also caused by her upbringing. Despite this, Nephele is not a dumb person, and she manages to overpower Rose for most of their battle until the latter outsmarts her by tricking her with an ace up her sleeve.

Following Nephele's defeat in battle, she breaks down once more and laughs maniacally when Rose claims to have won against her, threatening to kill the young woman. Once she finally accepts her defeat, she bursts into tears and blames Rose for the death of her sister, but her words cause Rose to lash out at her and punch her, which finally breaks the remains of Nephele's furious facade. Admitting her responsibility and explaining to Rose her story.

Once done, Nephele loses all will to live, and she commits suicide by forcing her body to use her own ability until she shatters and turns into dust. While Rose hated her for many years, she still shed tears over the broken woman's death. Nephele did not blame Rose for her death, taking responsibility for it post-mortem.

Abilities

"Talent"

Nephele's Talent is My Real Me is Scattered. An ability bound to Nephele's body, My Real Me is Scattered has two main functions. The first one grants her the ability to detach her body parts in 17 different areas of her body (marked by the stitch tattoos she has). The detached parts can be controlled to a limited degree, or she utilize the ability's secondary function.

My Real Me is Scattered's secondary ability allows Nephele to bind illusions onto the detached body parts, making them appear like a clone of hers. Despite being detached, Nephele can still feel the parts as if they were still attached to her, allowing her to walk freely even if, for example, her foot has been detached. The "clones" Nephele creates can grasp and harm others, but they cannot be touched or grabbed themselves. This combination of functions makes My Real Me is Scattered exceptionally useful in combat, allowing Nephele to attack precisely and execute various tactics and plans to a tee. The more "clones" are on the battlefield, the easier it becomes for Nephele to overwhelm her target.

The ability's main weakness is that once Nephele's target figures out how the ability works, it becomes much easier to attack the "original" Nephele, which causes all the clones to disappear, leaving the real Nephele open to harm as her real body remains scattered.

Relationships

Family

  • Aura Vetti: Nephele's twin sister and closest friend. Nephele loved her sister dearly since they were born, with Aura acting as Nephele's other half due to their bond being so close. However, their parents' unequal treatment towards each sibling (with Aura receiving constant praise and Nephele constant disappointment) developed a rift between the sisters which caused Nephele to drift apart from Aura. Eventually, after Nephele participates in the Red Valley Murder and sent to jail, Aura begins visiting her sister. While she doesn't forgive Nephele for her actions, she still wishes to have a bond with her. Their relationship gradually healed, but simultaneously, Aura's personal life deteriorated and she was physically abused by her mother and mentally abused by foster families she lived with. Eventually, Nephele snapped at Aura and demanded to hear the truth from her, causing Aura to yell in response "Haven't you done enough?!". After this, Aura commits suicide, causing Nephele incredible amounts of anguish which eventually led to her development of her talent. Nephele saw Aura's existence as her one reason for living, and when her life was snuffed out, Nephele wanted to do the same.
