Personality and Relationships

Personality

Gyro has a cocky and flamboyant personality, appearing to have a high opinion of himself. However, he can be driven by emotions for other people and become realistic and serious when a problem presents itself. Like most manga archetypes, Gyro is incredibly intelligent when he needs to be. His most distinguishable body features are his long hair, distinct western hat and his teeth which have "GO! GO! ZEPPELI" written on them, revealed whenever he smiles at someone. Gyro has a penchant for humor involving wordplay and puns, frequently telling such jokes to Johnny in the spur of the moment. His signature laugh/chuckle is "Nyo ho ho ho~". On more than one occasion, Johnny has said that Gyro doesn't have the drive and determination necessary to get things done, no matter what the cost may be. This challenged his pride, making him push himself to work harder. After battling Ringo Roadagain he found himself what Ringo called the "True Man's World", overcoming his lack of motivation.

Araki personally liked the Jonathan-Zeppeli relationship from Phantom Blood and wanted to retell it again for a longer coming-of-age story. He chose to make Johnny and Gyro around the same age so they could be less formal and more friendly than their original counterparts. Gyro's random jokes and Johnny's trivial use of his spinning nails were included to reflect this concept.

During his early research for Steel Ball Run, Araki went horse-back riding and did outdoor camping. While he personally didn't like the former, he was intrigued by the concept of essential minimalism found within the latter. When he was told that he should only pack what he needed, Araki felt that he couldn't ever part ways with his iPod since the music it had would be an inseparable partner for him during the nights. He knew it would do nothing to help his actual survival, but he commented that every person has a similar impulse inside of them. This experience became the inspiration behind Gyro's packing scene and his insistence to hold onto his teddy bear before the start of the race.[1]
