Chapter 61
Summary
With the sun shining on Santana he begins to crumble, and as Joseph starts to congratulate Stroheim, Santana enters Stroheim’s body through his stubbed leg to escape the sun. Desperate to kill Santana however, Stroheim prepares to blow both of them up with a grenade and pulls it's pin. However, before he does this, Stroheim tells Joseph that there are other “Pillar Men” and Stroheim's division was sent to awaken Santana to discover another weakness besides the sun. Stroheim then finally tells Joseph to go to Rome where he will meet someone very important. After Stroheim tells all of this, the grenade explodes, leaving Joseph with more questions than answers.
Santana, exposed to the sun, then tries to make a last ditch effort to get to a nearby well, tackling Joseph into it too. However, this proves futile as the time was noon and the sun was directly shining above the well at that moment, so the light is also reflected in the waters surface which hits Santana from both sides, as he petrifies anyway.
