Adelheid Bernstein (アーデルハイド・バーンシュタイン, Āderuhaido Bānshutain) appears as one of the four potential mid-bosses and as an unlockable playable fighter in The King of Fighters XI.

His moveset is fundamentally the same as his from 2003, with several tweaks being made to both balance the character and fit him into the rest of the cast and the overall gameplay tweaks that XI brought.

As Adelheid's voice actor in The King of Fighters 2003, Tetsuya Tanaka reprises his role as Adelheid in this game as well.

Gameplay

After the third match, the player will face off against one of the five potential mid-bosses. In the home console version, depending on their performance, i.e., meeting the different requirements, Adelheid, Gai Tendo, Sho Hayate, Silber, or Jyazu will challenge the player and become playable upon the final boss Magaki's defeat. In this case, Adelheid will appear if the player has failed to meet any requirements. In the original Arcade/Atomiswave versions, the mid-bosses are unlocked by having the game run after a certain number of hours.

Like in the previous game, Adelheid is a Rushdown Character whose fighting style is very similar to his father's but faster and easier to chain together for combos. On the other hand, his moves are significantly weaker in priority. Almost all of his motion inputs have been changed to be similar to the rest of the cast, and he has also gained a new command taunt and a new Super Special Move. Overall, Adelheid has intimidating combos once enough meter has been attained, excellent supers, and a highly damaging/highly versatile Leader Super Special Move at his disposal. However, he still lacks a reversal and is greatly dependent on meter. Additionally, some of his moves now suffer from longer start-up and recovery, and he lacks a juggle.

As a mid-boss, Adelheid possesses above-average damage and melee range. However, while his movement speed is slightly reduced from his appearance in 2003, his defense has increased significantly, and he can withstand being hit with Super Special Moves without losing much health.

In this Leader Super Special Move, Adelheid dashes forward with his hand open. On a successful hit, he continues rushing forward while holding his foe by their chest and pushes them until he reaches the corner. Upon reaching the edge of the arena, he slams them back-first into the wall he's facing, causing a pillar of red energy with a skull to form. Using the + E version will have Rose appear and praise Adelheid for successfully landing the move.
