Well, then, let's make an arrangement. (では手合わせ願おう)

Adelheid Bernstein (アーデルハイド・バーンシュタイン, Āderuhaido Bānshutain), also known simply as Adel (アーデル, Āderu), is a video game character in The King of Fighters series, first appearing in The King of Fighters 2003 as the alternative final boss.

He, along with his younger sister, Rose Bernstein, are the only known children of the infamous crime mogul, Rugal Bernstein. As such, he is exceptionally gifted in the art of fighting and while still very young, is introduced as a very powerful and talented fighter. Together with Rose, Adel commands the flying fortress Sky Noah, and he confronts the winners of the 2003 King of Fighters tournament.

After participating in the following tournament as a single-entry contestant in order to test his own strength, when Rose falls under the control of an impending mysterious, inhuman threat known only as Those From the Past, Adel coordinates with Heidern, his father's mortal enemy, to stop them from releasing Orochi.

Appearance

In the official story, Adelheid is established as a 183 cm (6 ft) tall[4] and extremely muscular young man with a gentlemen's poise and a well-proportioned build. He has blonde hair, red eyes, and pale skin brought about by albinism,[a] generally resembling the appearance of a nobleman. He also wears red earrings in the shape of small rectangles and is often drawn with a somewhat androgynous face, accompanied by slightly long, pink-colored fingernails.

He is virtually always seen wearing a combat uniform with a dark green color scheme. This uniform consists of a sleeveless turtleneck, wide-legged pants held up by two thin belts and tucked into his combat boots, long fingerless gloves with gold studs on the back and knuckles, two gold stripes, and a gold/red emblem with the letter "R." He also sports black suspenders held with gold clips attached to his belt loops, and two gold chains attached to his belt loops.

In The King of Fighters XIII, Adel returns with a slightly updated look. He now sports pink-colored belts, a black sleeveless turtleneck, similarly colored pants and gloves, and suspenders hooked to his belt loops. His usually pale skin is slightly less so, as well.

Personality

So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate...
—Adelheid

Adelheid is an aristocratic young man who, despite sharing several physical and fighting traits with Rugal, is an honorable fighter who exhibits good sportsmanship, as demonstrated when he is defeated in The King of Fighters 2003. While he does not like his father, he loves his sister, even though sometimes he has his own doubts about her sincerity. Even so, upon realizing something is wrong with her in KOF XIII, he cooperated with one of his father's victims, Heidern, to get to the bottom of Those From the Past's plot, and at the then-strange behavior of his sister. He does not exhibit the evil ways of his father and has helped those Rugal has wronged on many occasions, particularly and most notably with Heidern.

History

At the behest of his little sister Rose, Adel challenged the champions of the 2003 KOF tournament, Team Ikari, in their flying fortress, Sky Noah and lost. Two years later, he entered the tournament as a single entry, and was under investigation by Heidern until he assured him he was a different person from his father.

In KOF XIII, he becomes a key player in regards to investigating Those from the Past, who have brainwashed Rose into assisting them.

Creation and Development

In order to broaden the world of KOF, developers sought to create a side story independent of the main story, thus leading to Adelheid and Rose's addition to the series.[4] The creators have also stated that he is the "other protagonist" of the Tales of Ash.[citation needed] Curiously, concept artwork in the art gallery found in the PlayStation port of The King of Fighters '99 depict characters strongly resembling Adel, Rose, and their panther mascot Gwan.[7] The background music for Adelheid's stage in KOF 2003 begins with Chopin's Revolutionary Etude, but trying to make this piano sound realistic on the Neo Geo required an enormous amount of data, which ended up taking up space on the voice data for other characters.[4] In The King of Fighters ALLSTAR, this theme was remixed for his KOF 2003 version, adding more elements from the Revolutionary Étude.

Casting

In all of his voiced appearances, Adelheid has been voiced by Tetsuya Tanaka. His lines in KOF ALLSTAR are reused from KOF 2003. However, on December 28, 2023, the KOF XI version of Adelheid was added as a UE fighter, with old voice lines being re-recorded, and entirely new ones being added as well.[8]
