Similarly to JoJo, the Guilty Gear series is full of references to music; especially that of metal and rock music.
References in Guilty Gear
- Overdrive Attacks are likely named after Overdrive Pedals a type of guitar pedal commonly used by rock or metal artists.
- Sol Badguy is named after the album Mr. Bad Guy by musician Freddy Mercury. Freddy's nickname was also Mr. Bad Guy.[1]
- His birth name, Frederick Bulsara, is a reference to Freddy Mercury's birth name, Farrokh Bulsara.
- His favorite musician, corresponding to his name, is the English rock band Queen.
- His instant kill from the original Guilty Gear is named All Guns Blazing, an allusion to the song All Guns Blazing by English heavy metal band Judas Priest.[1]
- His theme from the original Guilty Gear, Keep Yourself Alive, seems to be in reference to the song Keep Yourself Alive, the debut single of English rock band Queen.
- The theme seems to contain allusions to the song Stone Cold Crazy by Queen but also The Threat by American heavy metal band Skid Row.
- The belt he wears has the words 'FREE' etched onto it, with the multitude of references to Queen, it's likely that this is a reference to the song I Want To Break Free by Queen.
- Before the end of Guilty Gear -Strive-, the words "Rock You" is written on Sol's headband which is alludes to the song We Will Rock You by Queen.
- The text "Fight Fire With Fire" is on Sol's outfit which is a reference to the song Fight Fire With Fire by the American heavy metal band Metallica
- In Guilty Gear X, his instant kill is changed to Napalm Death, a reference to the English grindcore band Napalm Death.
- Ky Kise is named after Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske, both members of the German power metal band Helloween. Both of these members would also become a member of the group Gamma Ray.[1]
- His theme song from the original Guilty Gear, Holy Orders (Be Just Or Be Dead) references the song Be Quick or Be Dead by the English heavy metal band, Iron Maiden.
- The song also has a very similar riff to Yngwie Malmsteen's song, Rising Force, from the album Odyssey.
- His instant kill is named Ride the Lightning, referencing the Metallica album of the same name.
- In Guilty Gear X, his instant kill is changed to Rising Force, named after the Yngwie Malmsteen album, Rising Force.
- His theme song in Guilty Gear Xrd, Magnolia Éclair, references the riff of Electric Eye by English heavy metal band Judas Priest.
- His theme song from the original Guilty Gear, Holy Orders (Be Just Or Be Dead) references the song Be Quick or Be Dead by the English heavy metal band, Iron Maiden.
- Axl Low is named after frontman and leader of the American hard rock band Guns N' Roses, Axl Rose.
- His friendship with Sol (who is made up of many Queen references) may be a reference to Axl Rose being a huge fan of Queen, even joining and starred at The Freddy Mercury Tribute Concert in London 1992.
