Phantom Blood was written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki, serliazing from So and So date to So and So date. Starring Jonathan Joestar as its main character as he grows through a perilous period of his life. Phantom Blood went on to be adapted in film and anime form. Phantom Blood began the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure series and is widely loved by its community.
JoJo's iconic artstyle during this period, was inspired by the popularity of muscular heroes at the time, and Italian sculptures that Araki took a liking to during one of his trips. Early on, Araki planned the story of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure to go over multiple generations of protagonists and stories.
Araki describes the dynamic between Jonathan and Dio as "good and evil, white and black." This dynamic made them both "function as symbols and foils to one another". Jonathan being a pure, diginfied, symbol of justice and Dio as the ambitious, ultimate evil within the story. Araki states the themes behind Phantom Blood and rest of the series surround the question "I wonder who the strongest person in the world is?". This is reflected in Dio's character, who's ambition pushes him into becoming a vampire and attemtping to rule the world.
