ultra-violence® (アルトラバイオレンス, arutora baiorensu) or ultra BRAND, was a Japanese clothing brand notable for their collaborations with the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise that produced numerous themed apparel and accessories. It was owned by clothing designer Jun Okubo (大久 保潤, Ōkubo Jun) as part of Homedroogs Inc. (有限会社ホームドルーグ, Yūgengaisha Hōmu Dorūgu).[1]

History

Okubo had become independent in 1998 and began his career under the name HOME. In 1999, he established "Homedroogs Inc.", where he worked on grahpic design and art direction for various brands. He started the ultra-violence brand in 2000 and it only sold T-shirts before becoming a full-fledged fashion brand in 2001.[2]

The collaboration with JoJo's Bizarre Adventure first started officially in 2007. However, the brand had released two prior cut sew shirts based on Sticky Fingers in 2006. The products featured in the subsequent collaborations included a wide variety of clothing options like brooches, pendants, scarfs, jackets, belts, T-shirts, pants, and the popular replica of Yoshikage Kira's tie.

As of 2015, the company had presumably been discontinued.[3]

Trivia

  • With the "Sticky Fingers" cut & sew shirts, Jun Okubo is particularly fond of Bruno Bucciarati and didn't want to make a product that would upset JoJo fans, so he made multiple revisions to the design. When he was satisfied with the 3rd version, he thought it would be great to get Hirohiko Araki's approval of the design and thus showed him a sample and Araki let him make it with his approval.[97]
  • The text on the "JOJO ZOMBIES" shirt is styled after Led Zeppelin's logo, as the band members are the namesakes for the 4 zombies.
    • This shirt is also Araki's favorite from the brand (amongst the first line of shirts).[98]
  • The color scheme of The Grateful Dead on the white "PROSCIUTTO" shirt is based on the colors of the logo of The Grateful Dead, as the band is the namesake of the Stand.
  • The text and overall design of the "OINGO BOINGO" shirt, most clearly seen with the white version, is based on the poster for A Clockwork Orange. During their respective arc, the movie was referenced in the original WSJ title of Chapter 191 with "A Bombwork Orange."
