Tsukune Aono ((あお)()(つく)(), Aono Tsukune) is the main protagonist of Seven Stars Project.

Tsukune is introduced as a quiet young man leading a boring life who returns to Minami after a seven year abscence, and enrolls in the Higher Institute alongside his adopted brother Nagisa Aono. As the institute's newest student, he becomes part of a close-knit group of friends that includes Eita McQueen, Ryuji Toyota, Kineshi Hoshihiko, Ayano Tenjoin, Kana Kurokami, and transfer student Zenkichi Emukai, and frequently finds himself in troublesome situtations.

However, after a trip to the Void, Tsukune's life is forever changed upon awakening superhuman abilities, which he is forced to learn how to master as he becomes involved in various battles and encounters increasingly dangerous foes, such evil Abnormals, androids, psychics, and demi-humans. As the story unfolds, he becomes involved in an even greater conflict that has been left unresolved for two hundred years.

While he is initially believed to be an Earthling, it is through these battles that he discovers he is actually a member of a naturally powerful race of aliens only known as the Numbers, hailing from the distant planet Numeron, and begins facing opposition from extraterrestrial foes.

Appearance

Tsukune is canonically established as a very handsome and fair-skinned individual of above-average height (178 cm/5'10") and muscular build. He sports short, dark brown hair that appears slightly parted to the right and darkens to black as it lengthens to the nape of his neck, a sharp jaw, thin eyebrows, and piercing violet colored eyes which are drawn to look menacing. His uniquely colored eyes being something he inherited from his father, Tsukune bears a close resemblance with his father and their ancestor Light. He also bears a small mole on his left cheek and a small, golden star-shaped birthmark on the right side of neck.

In the earlier stages of the story, Tsukune is initially described as being a plain-looking young man of average height (170 cm/5'7") with slightly rounder black eyes, and is drawn as being somewhat scrawny, having little muscle, and like most characters in the series, being rather thin. In spite of this, Tsukune is still seen standing at least a head taller than Ayano. It is upon awakening his superhuman attributes that he becomes taller, gains a toned and well-developed physique, and his eyes go from black to violet. After the deaths of several important figures in his life, his eyes and mouth are typically furrowed.

His hair experiences changes depending on what form he is in, but by the end of the series, it becomes permanently white, which, according to Kana, makes his eyes "pop-out" more. His hair is also cut shorter, being neatly combed to show his face more. His piercing violet eyes appear softer and less threatening. As a child, Tsukune had a much more innocent appearance befitting his age, sporting shorter, light brown hair with two tufts of spiky hair on the right and round, wide eyes.

The superficial theme of Tsukune's primary attire experiences changes in his later appearances, and he also appears in a few different outfits. His first outfit is a modified white school uniform with black and gold accents that bears his symbol (a black "no" symbol) on his collar. Outside of school, his signature outfit is a small white, un-buttoned, collared jacket with a black turtleneck underneath to hide his birthmark on his neck. In addition, he also wears a belt on his upper arms over his jacket sleeves. In the later portions of the series, Tsukune is usually clothed in a much longer white, un-buttoned, collared trench coat with his signature black turtleneck underneath. The belts on his sleeves are also different, and he raises his collar upwards.

At the end of the series, Tsukune wears white regal clothing with a long blue cloak with gold accents.

Forms and Transformations

Awakened Mode

Awakened Mode (覚醒モード, Kakusei Mōdo) is a state of being that Tsukune unlocks after training with Zander in order to better fight against Saiko's psychic powers. In this state, Tsukune's physical appearance is not changed much, except that blue patterns that resemble the conductive tracks of a printed circuit board appear on his skin. When he enters this state, his physical body and attacks become greatly enhanced, and, more importantly, his mind, body, and soul become fully synchronized, allowing Tsukune to become much more focused and aware of his surroundings. Thanks to additional enhancements to this state via further training, this becomes Tsukune's natural form and allows him to fight admirably against the likes of extremely powerful demi-humans such as Kyosuke and Akuma.

Shinzou Numerion

Shinzou Numerion (新造ヌメリオン, Shinzō Numerion) is a transformation first achieves in a rage after Fate Acnologia injures Zander and kills Nagisa. In this form, Tsukune receives a great power boost, and his muscle and height receive a slight increase and his skin turns lighter. His eyes become much sterner and more defined with blue eyes. His hair becomes red and stands upward with no loose strands. His power also generates a red aura. His demeanor is greatly affected by this form, making him more aggressive and irritable. Tsukune eventually learns to access this form's raw might without actually transforming to conserve energy and masters it.

Numerion God

Numerion God (ヌメリオン(ゴッド), Numerion Goddo) is a transformation that Tsukune achieves after tapping into divine energy. It is a form well-beyond Shinzou Numerion that grants the user a power of a much higher tier. It is noted that Numerion God possesses the aura of a God. Tsukune's appearance in this form is mostly the same as his base form, but his hair is lighter and contains white high lights; he has golden irises instead of the usual violet and possesses a slightly thinner build and more youthful appearance.

Usage of this form grants various heightened capacities; he recovers at an accelerated rate and requires the most minute number of stamina to maintain this form. It lets him fight with more finesse and grace as he instinctively predicts his opponent's attacks with more efficiency. His energy signature becomes godly, allowing him to sense other such beings and likewise can mask himself from most entities sensing him. This form gives more versatile control and usage of his energy.

Final God

Final God (最終神(ファイナルゴッド), Fainaru Goddo) is Tsukune's final evolution. Upon finally understanding his mentors' words, Tsukune learned to let go of all self-doubt and live in the moment. When fully synchronizing his impulses with his natural drive, Tsukune can subconsciously unlock the full potential of his offensive and defensive might. This culminates with his silver glow consuming him, turning his hair white and skin tone more ethereal in nature. The power in this form is vastly greater than his previous ones that it completely shreds away his shirt upon transforming. In this state, Tsukune showed such excellent control of his energy, able to calmly repel and contain any energy assault thrown at him. He can unleash barrages of his energy in focused shockwaves and cancel out all but the strongest of attacks. In addition, while accessing this state, his body is fully rejuvenated, and can grow sturdier in areas in response to being attacked, even causing weaker foes to break their limbs trying to hit his body.

In the Final God form, Tsukune's power exceeds that of MAX Xeno and the Destroyers, and he can also channel his rage to empower himself even further. Initially, however, due to Tsukune's lack of training, this form cannot be maintained for long. After passing the time limit, Tsukune's body will give out, leaking out his energy in ravaging manner that will severely injure him as he regresses to normal form, leaving him struggling to even stand from the exhaustion. At the same time, despite learning to use this state at its fullest, Tsukune cannot access it at will, but rather only as an instinctual reaction to the direst of situations.

By his final confrontation with Perfect God Slayer Gear, Tsukune came to fully appreciate what selflessness is all about and became able to instantly access and deactivate Final God form at will with no drawbacks. By the time the fight with Z-One takes place, Tsukune has successfully made this form his natural state, and his power is such that he withstood a full power punch from Z-One and was able to match very evenly with him. However, as stated by Tsukune himself, his power pales in comparison to Nagisa, who is subsequently showcased to be able to smite Z-One with one blow.

Relationships

Nagisa Aono

Nagisa is Tsukune's adopted brother and his fully-fledged best friend. The two are often seen together, and thus, are prone into getting into mischief with each other. Through thick and thin, the two seem to have each other's back. Tsukune once went into a quiet rage when four girls physically assaulted Nagisa, swiftly beating and coldly threatening to kill them before calming down.

Tsukune describes Nagisa as a sort of "moral" guardian to him, for Nagisa is the one usually to call out his brother when his plans cross into immoral territory. The battle against Saiko reveals that Tsukune sees Nagisa in a better light than he lets on.

Ayano Tenjoin

Ayano and Tsukune have been friends since they were three years old and had a very platonic relationship growing up. In the series, Ayano shows some sign of attraction as early as in chapter 6, where she kisses Tsukune on the cheek in the cafeteria, but this was chalked up to her simply being grateful. However, she quickly begins showing obvious signs of attraction after Kana Kurokami begins spending more time with Tsukune, thus causing jealousy. Tsukune, on the other hand, shows no hint of attraction towards her, and while he still blushes or feels embarrassed whenever Ayano shows him affection, he remains adamant that they are just friends and even attempts to set her up with Connor O'Brien. Though his feelings for her can arguably seem to remain platonic for most of the series, he expresses disdain whenever Aren hits on her, and also felt mixed emotions during Ayano and Connor's brief relationship.

Later in the series, it is slowly hinted that he is understanding that he reciprocates her feelings. During his fight with Saiko Metori, Ayano confesses her love for Tsukune to the other Student Council members and breaks down in tears when he falls to Addes. When Ayano is brainwashed, the bond between the two enables Tsukune to return her back to her old personality. After the new student council election, Ayano finally confesses that she has fallen for him. Although Tsukune later fully realizes his feelings towards Ayano, he continues to deny his own happiness due to his own self-doubt, which leads to romantic tension between the two and causes discomfort for people such as Nagisa.

His feelings towards her, however, does not stop him from getting angry at her; he once became furious with her after a few girls beat up Nagisa to gain information on Tsukune's whereabouts, following a previous argument between him and Ayano that left the latter tearful. After reprimanding her for this incident and temporarily avoiding her, Tsukune acknowledged her lack of involvement and apologized, the two reconciling.
