Barbara Ann Joestar

I don't believe this! It must be some sort of mistake! How dare you make such judgements about a child? I demand a refund!
—Barbara Ann Joestar, The JOJOLands Chapter 2: South King Street

Barbara Ann Joestar (バーバラ・アン・ジョースター, Bābara An Jōsutā) is a tertiary character featured in the ninth part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, The JOJOLands.

She is one of Joseph Joestar and Suzi Q's daughters and the mother of Jodio and Dragona Joestar.

Appearance

Barbara is a thin woman of average height, with short, light, chin-length hair styled like a bob cut. She wears a polka dot sun hat, a long sleeveless vest with a polka dot pattern over a sleeveless top, and pants cropped above her ankles.[3]

She wore various different outfits in flashbacks along with varying hair colors. Four years prior, Barbara had a hairstyle resembling a pixie cut, with side-swept bangs and shorter hair on the sides. One of her outfits was an oversized dotted T-shirt paired with a suspender dress. The T-shirt had a centered graphic saying "HAWAIIAN" on a ribbon below a circle with several palm trees inside. A few months later, she is seen with a polka dot dress.[4] In other flashbacks, Barbara had dark hair with the chin-length bob cut style along with a headband and a T-shirt saying "Aloha". While going to work, she had a plain sunhat with a striped ribbon and a polka dot dress.[1]

Personality

Demanding a refund for Jodio's screening after hearing his diagnosis

Barbara is a diligent individual and although slightly strict at times, is a loving mother who thoroughly looks out for her children. She is a hard worker who takes on two jobs to support her family after her husband leaves home.[4] Her day begins with a strict routine: waking up at 6:45 in the morning, starting the washing machine, then getting dressed in the bathroom. She prepares a nutritious breakfast that includes toast, fruit, ham, and eggs—fried or boiled for seven minutes—along with fried broccoli. Afterward, she wakes up her children with a good-morning kiss and hangs the laundry out to dry before catching the bus to go to work at 8:06 A.M.[1] She staunchly refuses to accept a diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder for her son Jodio, even chiding the doctor for suggesting it.[5] Barbara is also concerned about the company her children keep, particularly wary of influences like Paco Laburantes.[3]

Due to her children discreetly working to maintain her well-being, everyone in the neighborhood respects and loves Barbara, providing her with assistance whenever she needs it. For instance, a neighborhood boy brings Barbara her bag if she forgets it, or another person may bring her an umbrella if it's raining while she's at the bus stop.[1]

Relationships

Family

  • Husband: Following Jodio's arson on the school bus, the insurance company he worked for placed the sole blame on him and he was forced to pay for the damages and flee Hawaii. Barbara admits to her children that their relationship was already strained and that he left of his own accord.
  • Jodio and Dragona Joestar: Her children whom she raises alone. They all love each other and ensure Barbara's social safety by helping her behind the scenes with their gang work. Barbara works two jobs to support them and keep them free of worry, and vows to give everything she can for them.[4] Barbara always gives them a good-morning kiss.[1]

History

Background

Barbara Ann Joestar and her husband moved to Honolulu, Hawaii from Atlantic City, New Jersey when Dragona was 14 and Jodio was 11 years old.[1][4] She was a stay-at-home mom, but had a bit of a strained relationship with her husband.[4]

A day after Jodio secretly committed an arson on a school bus, Barbara complained about him not studying since his grades were at the lowest of his class despite him being smart. Unaware of Jodio being the culprit of the arson, Barbara was thankful of Dragona not going to school on the previous day, since the school bus was filled with Dragona's classmates and teacher.

Barbara stressed about her husband leaving

A few months after the incident, an insurance company that Barbara's husband worked for was forced by the bus company to pay ten times more than the standard amount for the damages. Consequently, he was fired from the insurance company who blamed him for being the one who agreed to pay it. Feeling that he was cornered and could no longer live in Hawaii, Barbara's husband fled the state, abandoning her and his children there. Barbara informed Jodio and Dragona of the news, apologizing to them for not being able to be of any help to their father or leave with him.

Barbara had to pick up work to support her family, which she struggled with as it was difficult to acquire a job with good working conditions without any prior experience. She managed to get two jobs, but working both of them late into the night while also taking care of two children took a toll on her health. She was stressed with reminder notices about phone bills and tax payments piling up in her closet. The principal of McKinley High School, Meryl Mei Qi, also stated that Barbara could not even afford the school tuition.[4]

One day, Jodio had to take a psychological test at his school, and the results stated that Jodio might have antisocial personality disorder. Barbara refused to believe it, and demanded a refund.[5]

The JOJOLands

While on a bus, Barbara tries calling Dragona on the phone, but Dragona doesn't answer. She calls Jodio instead, to ask where they are. Jodio explains that they're just hanging out on the island of Hawaii and that Dragona's cellphone must be on airplane mode. Barbara hopes that they aren't hanging out with Paco Laburantes, since she heard rumors that he was in jail for about a year. She changes the subject to asking what they should have for dinner, but ends up choosing chicken burritos herself when Jodio says to pick anything. Before hanging up, she asks him to let Dragona know.[3]
