Families are an important part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. The manga covers the adventures of a particular family, the Joestars, who seem to have a hereditary tendency to get involved in strange happenings. During Part I: Phantom Blood, Jonathan Joestar, the first JoJo, begins his rivalry with Dio Brando, who also plays an important role in Part III: Stardust Crusaders and whose legacy has an indirect influence in Part IV: Diamond is Unbreakable and a direct one on Part VI: Stone Ocean.
- During Part 1 and Part II: Battle Tendency, members of the Zeppeli Family (William Antonio Zeppeli and Caesar Zeppeli respectively) act as mentors, colleagues and friends of the protagonists, having on both adventures a tragic end. Stardust Crusaders tells the story of Kujo Jotaro, the first JoJo not to bear the Joestar name.
- In Part IV: Diamond is Unbreakable, another family makes an appearance, the Higashikata Family.
- Part V: Vento Aureo contains a curious fact is that Giorno Giovanna, becomes a fusion of two families, bearing the lineage of Joestar Family well as a classic personality and ambition in the Brando Family.
- During Steel Ball Run, these families reappear (except for Kujo) taking important roles (e Joestar and e Zeppeli are the protagonists, while the antagonist is a Brando). Higashikata family becomes more important in Part 8 when they have various new members and when Kujo Family appears to be changed with Kira Family when Holly married Yoshihiro Kira instead of Sadao Kujo .
Anothers minor families remain in the new universe, like Pendleton,Speedwagon, Hirose, Nijimura and Stroheim.
