Moody Blues Strikes Back (ムーディー・ブルースの逆襲, Mūdī Burūsu no Gyakushū)[1] is the sixth episode of Golden Wind and the one hundred nineteenth episode of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: The Animation. The episode covers from Chapter 459 to Chapter 461 of the original manga with parts taken from Chapter 484.

A flashback is shown detailing the events leading to Abbacchio joining Passione. In the present, Abbacchio must use his Stand Moody Blues to investigate how his teammates keep disappearing and solve the mystery of the enemy's ability.

Summary

Before engaging in the mafia, Leone Abbacchio was a policeman

Leone Abbacchio was once a dedicated policeman and committed to his mission to help the people and fight for justice. However, his crime-ridden city, the ungratefulness on the people, and the fact that all criminals bribed officials to get away with their crimes eroded his enthusiasm. One night, he finally accepted the bribe of a pimp, telling himself that he was only keeping the peace. Later, Abbacchio investigated a robbery and was forced to arrest the robber, the same pimp he'd taken bribes from, and whom had just killed a man. Destabilized by the pimp's threats to reveal their deals, Abbacchio couldn't see the criminal draw his gun and was only saved when his partner jumped out of the dark at the last moment, taking a fatal bullet meant for him. Dishonored and thrown out of the police, Abbacchio became a destitute and hopeless man until he met Bruno Bucciarati.

Back to the present, a recap of the last episode is shown, as Giorno Giovanna gets attacked by the enemy, Bucciarati dashes to help him, but Abbacchio stops him, seeing that the fly Giorno has created is still there and therefore that Giorno isn't dead yet. However, when Bucciarati tries to zip out the ceiling of the interior, he sees that no one is hidden underneath them, the mystery of the enemy's modus operandi still remains.

Abbacchio reveals his Stand, Moody Blues

Summoning his Moody Blues, Abbacchio begins to investigate the question. Moody Blues turns into Narancia and begins to rewind, copying everything that Narancia was doing minutes ago. Fast-forwarding to the moment Narancia disappeared, Leone and Bucciarati see that Narancia was stabbed, deflating like a pierced balloon and dragged down a drain. Yet, despite Moody Blues tracking the enemy's movements and Bucciarati's ability to zip through walls, they cannot find the enemy. Understanding that their foe has another trick in play and piecing the clues together, Abbacchio morphs his Stand back to its original form and hits the nearest walls. Despite his efforts, Abbacchio is stabbed and taken by the enemy.

Bucciarati punches Zucchero for good

Bucciarati now finds himself alone and in a rage punches everywhere with Sticky Fingers. Mario Zucchero thus begins to intimidate the team leader, threatening to kill his companions if he doesn't reveal where Polpo's treasure is hidden. However, Bucciarati has found out his foe's secret. Abbacchio has purposefully made his hands bleed by punching the walls, but his blood is nowhere in sight inside the boat, thus there is a second boat hidden somewhere. Bucciarati has opened the yacht's hull with Sticky Fingers, purposefully sinking it and forcing Zucchero to reveal a second yacht (registered as "Lagoon 2") that was deflated and used to cover the first one ("Lagoon 1") and thus providing a hiding spot. Having revealed himself, Zucchero resorts to pointing his Soft Machine's dagger at Abbacchio's throat, but Bucciarati is faster as he extended Sticky Fingers' arm, punching Zucchero from afar by detaching his arm and disabling him for good.

Abbacchio returns to his normal self and is satisfied that they have won the battle.

In an after-credits scene, another flashback details how Bucciarati convinces Abbacchio to join his team.

Manga/Anime Differences

  • Abbacchio's flashback is moved from the Man in the Mirror and Purple Haze story arc to this point in the story and is altered and expanded upon.
    • New scenes showing Abbacchio's daily life on the force are shown.
      • Abbacchio's police car has rocks thrown at it by random thugs, cracking its windshield. As he's running after them, he turns around to see a middle-aged lady's purse getting stolen; he had been led away on purpose. Abbacchio tries and fails to stop the purse-snatcher, earning the frustration and criticism of the woman's husband.
    • Newspaper articles about a burglar named Isacco are shown.
    • When Abbacchio and his partner investigate the shop during the break-in, it is now nighttime and the lights inside are off; the two carry flashlights in their free hands to light up the shop.
    • During their search, a man, presumably the store owner, is found dead with a bullet wound in his head.
    • Abbacchio's partner is not shown actually getting shot, with only the two guns being fired followed by a flash of light during the moment. His body is now lying face-down in a pool of blood rather than slumped against a door frame.
    • The crook repeatedly whines about how he's "gonna die" from his gunshot injury.
    • Abbacchio screams out when he looks down and realizes his partner had died saving him.
    • Abbacchio's first meeting with Bucciarati is shown.
      • On another rainy night, an out-of-uniform Abbacchio stumbles into the now-abandoned shop, holding a bottle of whiskey. Drunk, disheveled, and somehow injured slightly, he reminisces about the moment he failed as a member of the police force. As he's leaving, Bucciarati is watching him in the alley, holding an umbrella.
      • The alcohol bottle he has during their meeting, "Cronenberg Irish Whiskey," is the same brand Dio Brando was shown drinking in episode 2.
      • In an after-credits scene that shows the rest of their encounter, Bucciarati tells Abbacchio to join his team, and that results themselves do not matter but how they are achieved; a sentiment that Abbacchio's partner shares and would later reveal to him during their next meeting. After a moment's hesitation, Abbacchio silently puts down his bottle, confirming his decision to join Passione.
  • Black-tailed gulls are frequently shown throughout the episode, hinting at their later relevance during Bucciarati and Zucchero's confrontation at the end.
  • After Giorno disappears, Bucciarati's internal thought that the enemy managed to use his stand quickly enough that Giorno had no time to defend himself as well as hide Giorno has been removed.
  • Abbacchio has a line added insisting that Narancia and the enemy are below deck before Bucciarati unzips the boat. Originally, Bucciarati unzips the boat unprompted.
  • Originally, before Bucciarati inspects Narancia's deflated body, he asks Abbacchio where the fly is again. Abbacchio is now shown looking at the fly only.
  • In the manga, Bucciarati unzips the pipe Narancia was sucked into and Narancia's deformed body is shown.
  • As Abbacchio and Bucciarati follow Moody Blues across the boat, Bucciarati noticing the fly moving towards them and warning Abbacchio to be careful have been omitted.
  • When Bucciarati tells Abbacchio to run, they are squatting by the opened pipe. Originally, they are standing.
  • Before Abbacchio is attacked, he mentions that he noticed something strange about the mast of the boat earlier.
  • When Abbacchio is stabbed and abducted, Soft Machine comes out of a square hole in the floor to take him instead of through one of Bucciarati's zippers.
  • Abbacchio slaps blood from his injured knuckles onto Bucciarati's face before he's taken. When Bucciarati stares into the hole he was seemingly abducted into, a drop of blood falling into the floor below hints him towards the truth of Zucchero's attack; Abbacchio's own trail of blood stops between the inner and "outer" square of the hole, as if he was pulled between the cracks of the two and not below deck.
  • When Sticky Fingers punches the floor 'in search of Abbacchio', it does so for an extended amount of time and creates a large number of zippers. Bucciarati also screams angrily to make it appear as if he's in a frantic rage.
  • The camera work when Zucchero begins making demands to Bucciarati frames the scene to make it seem as if Zucchero was talking through the fly, rather than as a disembodied voice with no clear source.
  • When Bucciarati begins speaking to Zucchero during the hostage situation, the camera frequently flashes to an image of a broken structure underwater, nodding to Bucciarati having already punched a hole in the boat.
  • Just before the masts of the boats separate, Bucciarati comments that Abbacchio had noticed the two boats earlier.
  • Bucciarati and Zucchero's stand-off lasts much longer, creating suspense. They only make their moves the instant a droplet of water falls from Zucchero's face.
  • When Bucciarati attacks Zucchero, he is shown unzipping his arm and throwing it, not unlike how Giorno did against him during their fight.
  • Abbacchio is seen reinflating and regaining consciousness, with Bucciarati tending to him. The episode ends on Abbacchio warmly acknowledging Bucciarati's success.

Commentary

Abbacchio's past shows up earlier than in the manga, but it ends up working perfectly for the episode. And Moody Blues's cassette tape-like sound effect, which was a directorial choice exclusive to the anime, is impressive. Abbacchio says "I'll fast-forward a bit," but if this took place in the present day, he'd probably say something like, "Start from around chapter three."
Yuichi Nakamura, Blu-Ray limited edition commentaries
We enhanced Abbacchio's story to fit the tone of the episode. Since the main part of the episode focuses on Abbacchio and Bucciarati's efforts, we wanted to add Bucciarati's presence into Abbacchio's past. As a result, viewers can truly feel the sense of trust they have in each other.
Yasuko Kobayashi, Blu-Ray limited edition commentaries
1. Abbacchio's Past

The station that appears in the episode references the current Napoli Centrale. Keeping tourism in mind, Director Takahashi used the current layout of piazza in front of the station. "But be careful," he warns, "because the tour guide told us that area's a gateway to seedier parts of town!"

2. Moody Blues

Moody Blues does not have much screen time in the series, so Takahashi put special care to its depiction on screen. "Since Moody Blues deals with past events, we wanted that theme apparent as it manifests. Paired with after effects and sound effects, it ended up cooler than I imagined. It's one of my favorite Stands."

3. There were Two Boats All Along!

Soft Machine has one of the most confusing Stand abilities in Golden Wind, so Takahashi and scriptwriter Kazuyuki Fudeyasu wanted to make it as painless as possible. Takahashi recalls, "I had vented to Director Kimura and Producer Nobutaka Kasama while doing the storyboards, but I'm satisfied with the results."

4. The Fly

The sequences with the fly are Director Takahashi's favorite. As he read the manga, he felt that the fly was talking to him. He was entertained by how the post-production staff's improvised colors and effects made Bucciarati seem even more cornered. "Shinya Takahashi, who voices Zucchero, was also terrific, and I'm glad the scene turned out exciting"
—Hideya Takahashi, Blu-Ray limited edition commentaries
