"chase" is the second opening theme song of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable and the sixth overall opening theme of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: The Animation. The song is performed and arranged by the group batta,[4] consisting of Tomomori Mano, Asato Shinohara, Takeshi Hoshino, and Tatsu Hoshino, who wrote the lyrics. The single was released on July 27, 2016, with an additional instrumental and acoustic version included.

An English version of "chase" was included as a bonus track on the band's third album Prelude, released on October 17, 2018.[3]

Opening Animation

The logo appears

The opening begins with a drab gray visual of a heart featuring an anchor in the center, with the name "JoJo" on it. Thorns from Hermit Purple coil around the heart as a purple pulse monitor flashes on the screen. The pulse monitor becomes erratic, resembling a heart attack, before turning into electricity. The scene transitions into a dead end street with the main cast standing in the center while the camera rotates around them. The image then shifts to cans of soup in a freezer, with several women's hands visible, while the superimposed word "JoJo" is plastered across the scene.

The view shifts back to the cast, zooming in on Josuke as he strikes a pose before rotating to feature Okuyasu posing as well. It then flashes to suitcases with destination stickers from various countries, one of which is Egypt, where the arrow originated. Below the suitcases is a puddle of blood, and behind them, a cracked door with light shining through. The camera rotates again to show Joseph Joestar holding baby Shizuka before switching to Jotaro as he strikes a pose.

The scene then transitions to a photo of Koichi joyfully sitting with his friends, alongside Hazamada, Tamami, and Shigechi—all striking poses and pointing at the sky except for Yukako, who is happily gazing at Koichi, and Rohan, who points towards where Reimi's alley would be. The camera zooms out to reveal several Polaroid photos scattered on the ground, covered in tire marks. Suddenly, the killer's hand smashes down on all the photos, transforming into a skull. The pictures burst into flames and disintegrate as the main title emerges from the fire.

The title morphs into sticky notes, with each hiragana letter of the title on a separate note. These notes scatter, transitioning to a scene in a field where Okuyasu and Toshikazu watch Shigechi feed a flock of pigeons. Suddenly, a finger appears on the screen as the killer trims his nail, with reflections of three women visible in the nail. The scene quickly shifts back to Shigechi as the pigeons scatter, spooked. The position of the scissors aligns ominously with Shigechi's neck, hinting at his fate.

Sheer Heart Attack's skull

After a transition, Rohan is shown sketching the fleeing birds from the comfort of his home near the electrical pillars. He glances up from his notebook and gazes solemnly out the window. A single pigeon carries the scene into an aerial view of Hazamada and Tamami arguing on the sidewalk, while Josuke and Koichi chat with Okuyasu through scratched glass. Bug-Eaten and other rats appear above them as the view slowly pans to the heart from earlier, which Koichi stops to observe.

The heart dominates the screen as everything else fades to black. Suddenly, a decrepit hand with long nails reaches out, grasping the heart, causing the surrounding thorns to explode as the background turns red. Out of nowhere, the skull of Sheer Heart Attack appears, devouring the heart and hand in a single bite, causing the thorns to spurt blood as if they were arteries.

Emerging from the darkness is Echoes ACT3, shrouded in shadow (until Episode 24 when it is fully revealed), its eyes glowing. In the background, the silhouettes of Koichi and Hazamada are unraveled into books by Heaven's Door. Green waves ripple from Echoes' hands as it claps, transitioning to Love Deluxe and Cinderella standing side by side. Surgical dotted lines shaped like arrows split open into an eye, then a square, before white rectangles fall from above, transforming the two Stands into their users, Yukako and Aya. The camera zooms out to reveal the two sitting on a bed in Aya's salon, Aya clutching Yukako's face, while white rectangles separate them and dim blue lights shine from above.

The camera zooms in again, revealing the white rectangles as photo reels with two hands holding each other. The hands disappear, and the scene distorts into windows showing the killer holding one of the severed hands of his "girlfriends". The windows fade, revealing an old man menacingly holding a bleeding arrow, standing motionless inside a picture, his head bowed and face shrouded in shadow. As the camera zooms toward him, the scene transitions to Reimi's alley, where the spirits of Arnold and Reimi cry out in pain. The camera pans behind Reimi, sketchy lines depicting Killer Queen's skull briefly transforming into several black Arrows.

Josuke pursues the killer

The Arrows shoot out at Jotaro, Okuyasu, Koichi, and their Stands, barely missing them as they prepare for battle. The camera then shifts to Josuke, who, with a furious expression, summons Crazy Diamond, shattering the Arrows into pieces. As Crazy Diamond roars and destroys the remaining Arrows, Josuke charges forward, reaching out toward the killer's silhouette. The camera zooms in, trying to reveal the killer's face as he turns toward Josuke, revealing a cold, blue, feline-like eye.

Official English Version

My heart is about to erupt
Bad feeling has grown in our days
It's never peace, I'm losing myself

Up to now I haven't noticed
You can't act like me before anymore
Time is coming, baby, can you run away?

Like an arrow, sharp and narrow, hearts will crush again.
It's dazzling full of it, can't you see?

So all I do is chase you
And I will chase you
Yes I can chase you
Nowhere you can hide

Start running, I will chase you
And I will chase you
So come and smell this world full of pain

Hang in there
That's a clue
Win this game
So watch me I'll chase you

Just like an arrow, sharp and narrow, hearts will crush again
Now it's time to take back what you stole from me

So all I do is chase you
And I will chase you
Yes I can chase you
Nowhere you can hide

Start running, I will chase you
And I will chase you
So come and smell this world full of pain

Cha-cha-chase you
Cha-cha-chase you
Cha-cha-chase you
Wide awake, but I'm still dreaming

Cha-cha-chase you
Cha-cha-chase you
No, it may never ever end

Hang in there
That's a clue
Win this game
So watch me I'll chase you

Trivia

  • According to the opening director, Yasufumi Soejima, the pigeon feeding scene originally had scripted dialogue consisting of Okuyasu telling Hazamada "not to kill the pigeons again", and Hazamada claiming he would never do such a thing.[5]
  • The opening adds Reimi and Arnold to the group photograph, behind Rohan, from Episode 18 onward.
  • After Echoes ACT3 is revealed, the opening removes its shadow obscurity and has it replace ACT2 next to Koichi.
  • The flames burning up the photos of Josuke and his friends are likely a reference to Cheap Trick trying to get Rohan to burn the photos that reveal Kira's new identity.
  • Similar to STAND PROUD, chase has an "Acoustic Version" of the opening that features a slowed-down tempo with more of a melancholy tone.
